New Jersey Community Solar Program Rules Updated

Official title: Adopted Amendments: N.J.A.C. 14:8-9.1, 9

What is this?

New Jersey updated its rules for the Community Solar Energy Program, which lets neighbors share the benefits of solar power from shared solar panels. These changes were approved in September 2024 and make it easier for more people to use solar energy without putting panels on their own homes. The new rules take effect now and will expire on February 27, 2026 unless renewed.

Who does this affect?

  • Renters and homeowners who can't install solar panels on their own property
  • Community solar companies that build and operate shared solar projects
  • Utility companies that manage electricity distribution in New Jersey
  • Low-income households looking for ways to save on energy costs

What can you do?

1.Check if a community solar project is available in your area and sign up to receive credits on your electricity bill
2.Contact your local utility or visit the NJ Board of Public Utilities website to learn more about community solar options near you
3.Encourage your town or community to support community solar development as a renewable energy option

Timeline

  • September 4, 2024 - Rules officially adopted
  • October 7, 2024 - Rules published in NJ Register
  • February 27, 2026 - Expiration date (unless renewed)
What this means for you

The new rules take effect now and will expire on February 27, 2026 unless renewed.
